Correspondence From a Gentleman: On how to be a Gentleman
There is no doubt that by now you perseverate on the following: what is the Respectable Gentlemen approach to Harold, to improvisation, to life? And, although a Gentleman—always capitalized, always proper—colloquially never tells, today I welcome you to our world of wonder and delight. I have set aside some Henri IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac for us, but as Bizet’s Habanera delicately warms my study, I find myself fancying a stroll through my courtyard. Come, let me show you the view through the Gentleman’s looking glass, and join me as we walk and feed my heirloom geese. Our approach is quite simple: we are honored to be in each other’s presence. We treasure every contribution on stage as though it is the rarest and finest of gifts. How can I find agreement, how can I be present in each moment, and how can I honor and best support my fellow Gentlemen are questions we often ask ourselves. The answer is we value each moment and each contribution. It is a philosophy we take with us as Gentlemen through all our journeys, on stage and off. Consider the moments and people that cause time to be distorted and allow you to lose yourself (what we imagine it must feel like to be in the arms of a Gentleman). We aim to recreate Einstein’s metaphor of relativity—a short moment on a hot stove can feel like an eternity, while an eternity with a beautiful woman can feel like a short moment—every time we take the stage. Our performances are Einstein’s beautiful woman, and are not merely fast paced and wild. Be here now. Be the master weaver—accept what you are given, make it amazing, and regard your scene partner as the Gentleman/Genius/Philosopher they are. That is the method of a Gentleman. Careful, the geese just shat everywhere.
